Today's Horoscope

All signs:

Today we should take a moment to remind ourselves that we live in a world that makes no sense. In demanding that it does, we only find disappointment and drive ourselves crazy. We will be let down nearly every time by the weather, by our leaders, by our deities, by our heroes, and often by the actions of the people we love most.

We will see patterns everywhere, and as soon as we think we have them recognized, they will change. We will discover great truths, and craft clever proverbs and idioms that turn out not to apply after all. We will make vows and promises, only to find that those words don't usually hold their original value.

Much of mankind's existence has been a never ending quest to make sense of everything around us, but the more we learn the more we realize that everything is infinite probability and nothing is as it appears. We are reminded daily that nothing is nearly as simple or complicated as we think, and very little in this world can be depended on to stay constant, seemingly from one day to the next.

Disaster or victory can come at a moments notice, without warning and on the wings of a butterfly or with the deafening roar of a freight train.

We are forever tripped up by these seemingly random and unexplainable occurrences, swept back and forth by unseen currents and eddies that turn and twist us at their will with no purpose. We have no control and are at the mercy of a universal will that has no plan, and no idea what it's doing.

Or maybe it does, but we just lack the tools it takes to see and understand it. We might not be wired to recognize the markers. If truth exists in color but we can only see in black and white, we will pass it by every time. If time and space are in constant flux, the moment we are experiencing has already passed us by.

Perhaps the maddening truth is that there is very little truth at all. So much is not known, and in our journey to discovery we keep thinking we have arrived at our destination prematurely. In almost no time we find that we have to pick up and start moving on again, another lesson learned and another painful reminder that nothing is as it seems.

The only way to avoid this is to accept that we control very little in our lives. We can try to predict what will happen and what people will do in our everyday lives, but understand that it's just an educated guess and often those predictions will be wrong. And it will mess up your day sometimes, or in rare occasions, your life. So try to guess wisely and be prepared for disappointment. Things in life will be painful, but more often than not it will be just fine. There will also be moments of great joy, and they will balance out the sorrow. One of the few things you can control is how much leverage all these senseless events exert on you. Take away their power over you and keep your fear of the unknown possibilities in check if you can manage it.

The stars discovered long ago that even with the great forces they exert across the universe, they actually control very little of it. They made their peace with it and are happy to do their part while they sail along through the ever expanding cosmos. They live like we all do, immersed in chaos and turmoil, at the whim of forces they do not understand and most likely never will.

The only thing you can depend on is that when you keep demanding that things make sense in a senseless world, you will be miserable, engaged in a fruitless endeavor that will leave you beaten and bowed. It is a losing battle.

Accepting that very little makes sense in life will be one of the few sensible things you do.
