Demand better. Leaders and powerful people get away with treating the population like garbage, making life terrible for the many, while the few reap the benefits, and we throw our hands up and say that’s just how politics and society is. Racists and misogynists and people filled with hatred get away with rape and murder and abuse, and they get away with it because many of us just accept that is how people are, and what can you do. Police and authority figures make a mockery of their oaths to protect and serve, and we make excuses for them and say it’s tough to be them.
We go out of our way to let people off the hook, the very people who hold us back and hold us down. They have tricked us into setting the bar so low that we expect cruelty and disrespect. We blame victims and ourselves for the punishment received, and don’t bother holding the real villains accountable. We have been conditioned to be apathetic, and to think we are ineffectual and deserve whatever bad treatment we get.
We do not demand respect. We do not demand fair treatment or explanations, and excellence of the people we put our trust and faith in, who we give our loyalty to, and give up our freedoms for.
That starts with demanding respect from yourself. When you don’t respect yourself, you can’t demand it from anyone else. So learn to respect yourself, and if you can’t, become someone you respect.
Then go demand respect from any motherfucker who thinks they deserve yours.
